The Door

he knocked upon the door
he knocked upon the door
and it was opened
and he was led in
and he was fed
and when he left
the few who loved him
cried, cried for his feet,
that they must wear his soles thin
he knocked upon the door
and it was opened
and he was invited
to join in a celebration
he knew not what for,
for when he left everyone else came
and laughter turned to tears
and tears turned to laughter
he knocked upon the door
and it was not opened
and he was left outside
and he was cold
and when he knocked again
there was a sound of ruffling leaves and a whisper,
and he cried, cried for his skin,
that it should not feel
he knocked upon the door
and it disappeared before his eyes
